With the fast pace of today's busy world, most of us can ill afford to forget important meetings or wrestle with a wandering focus while a deadline looms. We're all aware of the negative effects that poor sleeping habits, stress, and aging can have on how effectively we work as well as play with our minds.

The Effect of Modern Nutrition on Mental Focus

Less well known is the impact of certain nutrients on the health of the brain and mental functioning. Like any other organ, the neural network requires regular doses of the chemicals that comprise the cells. The complex needs of the seat of consciousness are rarely filled by a donut for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch, but that is exactly what many people count on to get them through a day.

Many popular alertness aids are based on caffeine or some similar stimulant, but these provide only a temporary boost at the price of mood problems, sleep issues, and, ultimately, dependence. Additionally, caffeine may cause deficiencies in important minerals and vitamins, putting greater stress on a poorly fed body and mind.

Dietary Suggestions to Improve Mental Function

Recent decades have revealed the importance of essential amino acids as well as Omega fatty acids in improving mental function, memory, and brain health. Along with increased longevity has come a rash of devastating neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, which may be preventable through the application of healthy whole foods.

The connection between body and mind has been familiar to healers since ancient times, but it is relatively recently that scientists have been able to isolate the compounds responsible for proper functioning of the brain. Armed with this knowledge, health-conscious individuals have set out in search of the foods which enhance the functioning of the most vital of all organs.

One amino acid thought to play an important role in mental functioning is tryptophan, which is more widely known for its sedative and appetite suppressant properties. Tryptophan is the chemical parent of 5-HTP, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Eating foods rich in tryptophan helps ensure that the brain has enough serotonin.

Synthetic tryptophan supplements have therefore become popular products on vitamin supply store shelves, but many experts warn that their use may not be the best for the body, as this may trigger an immune response.

A better source of tryptophan are whole, natural green foods which also contain Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals in bioavailable form. The delicate needs of neurochemistry are more dependent on trace nutrients available in superfoods than perhaps any other system in the body.
